I've manually created "cache" directory and that error disappeared. But now I have the following error
net./build_and_test FAILEDprobably the same issue?

Also you can try a quick fix to set the environment variable:HiSo that error suggests you have a permission problem on the MESA_DIR/data folder. MESA during a run will write out several cache files to a local directory and then will try to move them to $MESA_DIR/data folder.
What is the output of:
ls -lha $MESA_DIR/data
Though that will need to be set in your ~/.bashrc so that its used for all your mesa runs. Or deleting this folder and re-downloading mesa should get you a folder with the right permissions preset.

I did what you suggested. The file is attached. Indeed, this time I see some error messages.

RobThanksHiCan you please run the following commandcd $MESA_DIR && ./clean && ./mk 2>&1 | tee build.log
This will clean the MESA_DIR of the part compiled bits of mesa then build it again, logging the output to a file called build.log. Please send this file (build.log)

there is no such file (tmp.txt) in $MESA_DIR/rates/test directory

As pointed out by aaron (and missed by me) the error message comes form rates not the eos. So there should be a tmp.txt file in the $MESA_DIR/rates/test folderRob

Thanks for the suggestion!The tmp.txt is quite a long file (attached). I found that this file does not contain any error message though.

RobThanksHiIf you look in the folder $MESA_DIR/eos/test there should be a file called tmp.txt. Please send that, as that should contain an error message about what happened

Dear MESA users,
I have a problem with installing mesa-r10000 on Ubuntu (Linux version 4.4.0-97-generic, "Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS"), mesasdk version of September 21, 2017.The problem is in eos:
the last compiling command (no error at that stage) is:gfortran -fopenmp -o ../show_rates reaction_rate_from_cache.o -L../../make -lrates -L../../../lib -lchem -leos -linterp_2d -linterp_1d -lnum -lf2crlibm -lcrlibm -lm
tx -lconst -lutils `mesasdk_lapack_link` `mesasdk_blas_link` `mesasdk_hdf5_link`
will very much appreciate if anyone can help me with this,
