Hello Natasha,

The short answer is yes, energy_eqn_option = 'dedt' is still valid, and MESA carries the modifications to cgrav into every calculation that uses it. This includes the gravitational potential wherever it is realized, as in the calculation of cell specific potential energies.

If one uses a modified gravity prescription, is the option energy_eqn_option = 'dedt' still valid? I understand that energy_eqn_option = 'eps_grav' should remain valid, but I’m curious about 'dedt'.

I’m asking because for energy conservation with 'dedt' to be valid, one would need to ensure that energy is conserved in a different gravitational potential field, and I’m not sure whether MESA accounts for that.

MESA version 23 or 24.
