[Mesa-users] Flux limited diffusion radiation hydrodynamics in later versions of MESA

Dear users,

In the scientific cases of my interest, I would like to have an approximate way to model the transition from diffusive to free-streaming radiative transport. I am aware that recent versions of MESA do not have the option of use_flux_limiting_with_dPrad_dm_form for flux-limited radiation transport. Personally, I would like to port such option from an old version to the 23.05.01 version, but first I would like to know if there is a specific reason this functionality was removed?

I have experience expanding MESA by the addition of hooks, but this addition needs to be done in the source code (correct me if I am wrong). Is it possible to have any material explaining the good practices on expanding the MESA source code?

As well, by taking as reference the function do1_alt_dlnT_dm_eqn from MESA 9793, I see that the partial derivatives of Lrad are defined explicitly in the function, but in the same function for 23.05.01 such code is not explicitly written (for
use_dPrad_dm_form_of_T_gradient_eqn case that is in both versions, to mention a comparable example in both versions). I this due to the usage of the auto_diff module in 23.05.01?

I hope I can get some guidance in the previous aspects.
