Hello Levi,

Thanks for sharing your problem and inlists!

Be careful, note that there was a reaction rate bug during the end of helium burning in r22.11.1, see https://docs.mesastar.org/en/24.08.1/known_bugs.html#rates. So it's probably not ideal to use this version for a core-collapse model, perhaps try in the latest mesa release version 24.08.1 which is relatively similar.

It seems the inlists you have shared were used primarily to model main-sequence stellar evolution models in Z. Keszthelyi 2024? They might not be ideal for evolution to core-collapse. Perhaps compare those inlists directly to the 20M_pre_ms_to_cc or other test_suites to see what differences there are? Perhaps try evolving the model without the magnetic fields or extra microphysics and see if it can get to CC normally, and then reintroduce these options slowly to catch any issues.

Perhaps investigate what is limiting the time step as the model begins the time step dive? If there is no time step information and instead the solver stuck doing many retries out of no where, perhaps turn on "report_solver_progress = .true." in your inlist. This will provide information about what zone has the largest residual (disagreement between right and left hand side of the equations being solved) which will inform you of what zone in the solver is having difficulty in your stellar model. This can give insight into the source of the problem. If you have an idea of the source of the issue, perhaps add some more pgstar panels or make some additional plots of these quantities of interest.

Subject: [Mesa-users] Model Crash at Central Carbon Abundance of 10^-4

Dear all,

I am currently working on evolving a stellar model to the point of core collapse using MESA version r22.11.1 and MESASDK 22.6.1. However, the model crashes when the central carbon abundance approaches approximately 10^-4. The model is based on the work by Z. Keszthelyi 2024 (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13309019).

I have attached the model and terminal output. I would greatly appreciate any insights or suggestions that might have regarding this issue.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I am happy to provide any additional information if needed.

Best regards,
Levi
