[Mesa-users] Core Collapse Model for SN1B Test Suit Inquiry

Hi David,

There's a few things to unpack here. First of all, the
20M_pre_ms_to_core_collapse takes a 20 solar mass star from its
pre-main-sequence to the iron core infall (after core silicon burning, when
the iron core collapses), but does not itself simulate the explosion. By
default, the star also retains hydrogen, which would mean that it would
form a type II supernova rather than a type I supernova even when you do
explode the star.

To simulate the explosion and lightcurves, you'd want to follow the
procedure in the ccsn_IIp test suite case, and discussed in the IVth MESA
instrument paper, where you excise the core, deposit energy into the
interior of the star, and let the shock run through the star. The procedure
in ccsn_IIp will take the star to just prior to shock-breakout, which is
still before any lightcurve would start to appear for the supernova. To
then simulate the supernova lightcurve, you would need to use a tool like
STELLA, which there's a copy in $MESA_DIR/stella . STELLA has a decent
README, but for more info, the best albeit slightly-out-of-date
documentation we have are some slides I put together as part of the 2019
MESA Summer School, Zenodo link here: https://zenodo.org/records/3372839 .
(I do plan to add some up-to-date documentation for the handoff interface
from MESA to STELLA directly to the MESA documentation when I get some free
time.)

There's also the matter of making a Ib supernova, which requires stripping
the H-rich envelope so there's no H left. Have you gotten a stripped star
model by modifying the 20M... test case? Or is there a H-rich envelope
remaining in the model at the time of core-collapse? If the latter, then it
will turn out to be a IIP supernova rather than a Ib.
You might want to check out make_pre_ccsn_13bvn for creating a
stripped-envelope progenitor star similar to that shown in the IVth MESA
instrument paper (see Figure 47 and the surrounding discussion)
https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2018ApJS..234...34P/abstract.

Similarly, all the inlists from MESA IV are public on Zenodo (
https://zenodo.org/records/2596697), including the stripped-star Ib
explosion setup. Although they're in an old revision, they still may
provide useful inspiration for your own numerical experiments.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
~Jared
