[Mesa-users] Inquiry on Simulating RRd Radial Pulsation Models in MESA

Dear Sun Weichao,

The short answer is, unfortunately, you cannot get double-mode nonlinear
pulsations of RR Lyrae stars with RSP.

The modelling of double-mode radial pulsation is a challenging and in my
opinion still unsolved problem. In the literature, you can find double-mode
pulsations computed using the Florida-Budapest code, see e.g.,

however in my works we showed that these double-mode pulsations develop due
to a specific assumption (neglect of negative buoyancy), which we argued is
incorrect, see eg.,:

(these papers focus on Cepheids, but conclusions hold for RR Lyr stars)
Since RSP follows the model that includes negative buoyancy, the same as
used in the last two references, one cannot get non-resonant double-mode
pulsations with RSP.
In my opinion, the problem of modelling double-mode radial pulsations
remains unsolved.
