Hi All,
We are pleased to announce the next public release of MESA, r23.05.1, which can now be downloaded from Zenodo: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2602941 <https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2602941>
For a complete list of important changes since the last release, see the changelog <https://docs.mesastar.org/en/release-r23.05.1/changelog.html>. Here is a brief summary of some important updates:
The inlist controls for reading in extra inlists have been changed to arrays. The changes to the names for these controls mean that inlists from most work directories for previous MESA versions will not be compatible with this release out of the box, but will be straightforward to update. For convenience, we have provided a script to update all inlists in a local directory simply by invoking this command in your terminal: $MESA_DIR/scripts/update_inlists
A new option has been introduced to include carbon-oxygen phase separation in crystallizing white dwarf models.
An important bug in the reverse triple-alpha rate (r_c12_to_he4_he4_he4) has been identified and corrected. This bug impacts the previous two MESA releases (r22.05.1 and r22.11.1), and users are encouraged to upgrade to this latest release for modeling helium burning onward.
The resolution control convective_bdy_weight for adding zones at convective boundaries has been reintroduced.
This version introduces pgbinary, the equivalent of pgstar for binary evolution runs. Its main features are to visualize binary history info, as well as embedding entire pgstar setups in a pgbinary window (so separate pgstar windows for each star are no longer needed). binary/test_suite/evolve_both_stars contains an example setup of pgstar interacting with pgbinary.
With thanks to the following members of the community for contributions:
Hannah Brinkman, Lynn Buchele, Ebraheem Farag, Anuj Gautam, Jared Goldberg, Simon Guichandut, Claudia Reyes, Ben Roulston
We are also happy to announce that two new members have joined the MESA developers team: Matthias Fabry and Joey Mombarg. As always, the full list of current MESA developers can be found here: https://docs.mesastar.org/en/latest/about.html#developers <https://docs.mesastar.org/en/latest/about.html#developers>
We welcome contributions from the community. If you want to contribute to MESA we have a guide <https://docs.mesastar.org/en/r21.12.1/developing/contributing.html>https://docs.mesastar.org/en/latest/contributing.html <https://docs.mesastar.org/en/latest/contributing.html>. Contributions can take many forms, including bug reports, documentation fixes, and new code or science. Not everyone has to be a coder to contribute. If you have something you want to contribute but have doubts about it, then feel free to reach out to any of the MESA developers and we can provide help and guidance.
Cheers,
Evan, on behalf of the MESA developers <https://docs.mesastar.org/en/latest/about.html#developers>
