Dear MESA-users
It has come to our attention that there is a serious bug in the reverse
3alpha reaction rate (C12-> 3He4). This bug leads to C12 being
photo-distintergrated in helium cores and thus C12 becomes depleted in the
core by the time core helium burning finishes.
This bug effects the following versions:
r22.05.1
r22.11.1
Earlier versions of MESA are not affected and the next release r23.05.1
will have this bug fixed (the current -rc1 also has this bug).
We advise people who are interested in evolution during core helium burning
and beyond to either revert to an earlier MESA version or wait for the next
release.
With thanks to Ebraheem Farag for finding this (
https://github.com/MESAHub/mesa/issues/526)
As a reminder there is a list of known bugs in previous MESA versions
https://docs.mesastar.org/en/latest/known_bugs.html and we advise users to
consult this page before picking a version to use for their science. Users
should consult the “latest” version of this page as this will be the most
up-to-date listing of known bugs. At the bottom of the docs in the left
hand menu there is an option to select the version of the docs you are
reading, where "latest" refers to the most recent commit made to MESA.
We apologise for the inconvenience
Rob, on behalf of the MESA developers
