[Mesa-users] MESA in cloud computing (AWS for example?)

I used google cloud platform to host a JupyterHub server for a computational physics course for a semester before moving to other options. I don’t think GCP gives grants for research applications; they are more interested in helping teachers get their students working with GCP. It might work for computing resources for you, but I don’t think you’ll get any freebies from them.

If you can, I would just buy/build a linux workstation that your students can ssh into. A powerful multiple-core CPU paired with ample memory and storage can be had for a reasonable price, and it would have enough resources for three or four students to use simultaneously.

Willie, is it too expensive to use AWS for MESA? May I know roughly how much do you spend for it?

Bill, thanks for the information about Google Cloud. What kind of application/work that you run using Google Cloud if you don't mind sharing?

Probably I didn't mention why I need computing power for students, in this case it is for grad students (both MSc and PhD) not for the bachelor's degree program so mesa-web is not sufficient for the research requirement.

I have plenty of grant money (but not much!) and our system here does not allow us to buy new physical HPC/upgrade the old system so that's why I am looking for a cloud computing option.

Another option is to have students use mesa docker. Depending on the resolution and nuclear network, weaker student machines might become RAM starved, though.

Otherwise, google cloud platform does (or did) offer educational grants for use in classes. I didn’t use it for mesa, but I had a decent experience with them for other educational endeavors.
