Hi Evan,

Oh great! Glad I could break things in a helpful way! I confirm the inlist runs for all my low mass models now. Thanks again!

Cheers,
- Ben

Hi Ben,

Thanks! This is indeed a minor bug that I hadn't run across before. I've just fixed it on the main branch of MESA, and you can see the patch here:
https://github.com/MESAHub/mesa/commit/72c52f24cb9208ea3e331f5cb485b73c3a8005cf

If you apply that patch to your installation of mesa-r22.11.1 and reinstall (./mk && ./export from the star directory), your model should no longer crash. Alternatively, you could just turn off diffusion for your 0.1 solar mass model, since the star is fully convective anyway and diffusion really shouldn't make any difference.

Thanks for running a model grid that helped us discover and squash a diffusion bug!

Cheers,
Evan

Hi Evan,

Sorry for the slow response, your help is greatly appreciated! Here is the starting model for this run.

Hi Ben,

I'd be very interested in trying to help debug this. I don't think I've ever run across this particular failure mode of diffusion before, and I thought I had collected most of them by this point! Can you attach the starting model? Right now trying to run your inlists to reproduce the failure gives me

Hello,

I’m having an issue trying to evolve some lower mass stellar models from 1Gyr to TAMS (or 14Gyr). They seem to proceed normally, but then abruptly fail with the following message

remaining_source_mass 1 136 136 NaN 4.2369868473723005D+25 4.2369868473723005D+25

I think this has something to do with diffusion, but I’m not are exactly what issue is happening to cause the run to fail. I looked in star/private/diffusion_procs.f90 around line #749, and this is seeming to say that the remaining_source_mass value is NaN. I’m still looking deeper to see if I can figure out where this is coming from, but if anyone who knows more has any help that would be great!

For reference, I’m doing a grid in mass from 0.1Msun to 0.9 Msun. Using the same exact inlist except for the mass, all of the models run EXCEPT the 0.1Msun, the lowest mass case.

I am using MESA 22.10.1 and also using the SDK (mesasdk-aarch64-macos-22.10.1). MESA builds and runs fine. I include the output from MESA as an attachment. As well as the inlists used.

Cheers,
- Ben
