I can help fix this — but I’ll take it off the list to avoid cluttering up others’ mailboxes.

Yes, run it in the terminal.

Oh, I'm sorry, I will do that in the future. Do you mean if I run it in the terminal? (sorry, I'm new in Linux)

Thanks — in the future, if you can, please cut and paste output rather than taking screenshots.

What happens when you run this command from the command prompt:

touch /media/gabriela/4876ff2d-e242-4b48-90f9-75794f8830d0/test.txt

It could be that the flash drive is being mounted read-only. Can you post the output of the command ‘findmnt -a’, so we can see what’s happening?

I think I can't do it. I can't even create a folder inside. Probably I won't be able to install MESA on my personal computer.

You first need to figure out where your flash drive is mounted —I believe on Linux Mint the default mount point is /media/<username>/<devicelabel>

Then, just use the standard ‘cp’ command to copy the MESA and SDK folders to that directory. Or, you can unpack the zip/tar files in that directory.

Thank you all so much! I formatted my flash drive to ext4. But now, how do I save the SDK and MESA folders there?

There's a few soft links in mesa/ (cough gyre cough), though mostly in the docs (and gyre).

The only important one is the ./star/make/pgstar.f90 -> ../private/pgstar_full.f90 link which would need a tweaked makefile to copy instead of link

For those with an installed mesa you can use

cd $MESA_DIR
find . -type l -ls

To find the softlinks

That may work, *if* MESA does not rely on symbolic links (Rob, can you advise)?

You should be able to put both MESA and the SDK on the flash drive, if you format the flash drive using a suitable filesystem (e.g., ext4). Directions on how to do this are here:

https://tecadmin.net/format-usb-in-linux/

(make sure you use mkfs.ext4!)

Hello again.

I am using Linux mint. But can't the sdk be in my home directory and the main MESA folder be in the flash drive?

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Gabriela

Dear Gabriela —

It sounds like your flash drive is formatted with a file system that does not support symbolic links. It’s possible to re-format the drive to fix this issue. But first, can I ask what operating system you are using?

cheers,

Rich

Hi!

I followed the steps in the website. So I downloaded the file mesasdk-x86_64-linux-21.4.1.tar.gz and saved it in the flash drive. Then, in the terminal, I used the command tar xvfz mesasdk-x86_64-linux-21.4.1.tar.gz and it gives back errors like

tar: mesasdk/lib64/libquadmath.so.0: Cannot create symlink to ‘libquadmath.so.0.0.0’: Operation not permitted

The errors are not always the same, but they are similar.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Gabriela

Hi

Yes MESA can be installed on an external hard drive. If you tell us what you did and why you think the SDK isn't working then maybe we can help.

Hello everyone!

I want to install MESA on my personal PC, but I am lacking the space. Can I install MESA in a flash drive or other external memory source? I tried this and the sdk doesn't work in the flash drive, but should MESA work if I put the correct path?

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,
Gabriela Lapa
