[Mesa-users] Massive Stars and Large Networks

Hi Mesa Users,

I'm reaching out not for direct problem solving but more for a discussion
or tips and tricks for those of you who use MESA for massive stars with
large networks.

Is anyone successfully using large networks ( > 150 species) to collapse
massive stars? If so, what are your secrets, please share them?

I've had very inconsistent success with models reaching collapse (fe_infall
= 1000 km/s) in the mass range of 10M_sun - 16 M_sun using mesa_204.net and
have had many successes with masses larger than 16M_sun. I've used multiple
revisions as early as r10398 and as new as r117** whichever one was updated
to fix the memory leak. I've used a variety of networks and test cases,
used test case inlists, split-burning, modeled inlists after the Farmer
2015 paper, adjusted a variety of tolerances, adjusting mixing and
convective overshooting parameters, etc., etc.. Many of my models grind
themself to a halt, fail in the hydro, or get extremely small time steps
and make no progress.
