[Mesa-users] ppisn: neutrino luminosity as a threshold for turning on Riemann solver

Hi Vahid,
Unfortunately, I cannot use Telegram in my country, so I will just stick to the mailing list. But thanks you for the invitation.
I find another problem when running very massive models of mass 150 Ms or 200 Ms. During relax_to_radiative_core or helium burning, I keep getting retries like
retry: max residual jumped -- give up in solver
retry: logT < hydro_mtx_min_allowed_logT
retry: logRho > hydro_mtx_max_allowed_logRho
which slows things down and makes it hard to get past main sequence stage or even enter the main sequence stage. I am keeping everything as defaults in ppisn test_suite except with rotation_flag turned off, so I don't understand what is causing the problem. Is it because I am using the latest version 15140 and some things don't work out as in old versions? Or is it just normal because the models are too massive? Can I tweak some settings in inlist_ppisn to get around this?
Thank you for your help.
Cheers,
Jing-Ze

Hi Francis and Pablo,
Thank you for your comments! So far I've tried a 60 solar mass and a 90 solar mass model with x_ctrl(3) = 12.5d0, and their final fates show no significant difference than the runs with x_ctrl(3) = 9d0. But I'll try more runs to see if it works for all masses.
Cheers,
Jing-Ze

And just as a quick comment, many of those options that regulate the turning on/off of hydro in the ppisn test case have evolved to attempt to make the test as reliable as possible. In my experience at least, shifting the threshold for neutrino luminosity too high can cause problems in pulses after the first one, where the star can be very bloated owing to the energy injection in the first pulse. Without hydro, the envelope of the model can struggle and drive timesteps down.
Still, would be pretty interesting for someone to study more in detail how much these numerical options affect the outcome. I did a few tests and did not find significant differences, other than a varying reliability of the models. But still, I never studied it systematically.
Cheers

dear jing-ze,
this is an excellent experiment for you to run!
then you'll be able to quantify the differences.

In Merchant 2019 paper it's set to be 10d0 (10^10 solar luminosity), whereas in the test_suite it's 9d0. If I want to delay the turning on of Riemann solver and set this value to be 12d0, will the results be much different (e.g., give very different BH masses or make a PPISN event become a direct iron core collapse)?
