And just as a quick comment, many of those options that regulate the
turning on/off of hydro in the ppisn test case have evolved to attempt to
make the test as reliable as possible. In my experience at least, shifting
the threshold for neutrino luminosity too high can cause problems in pulses
after the first one, where the star can be very bloated owing to the energy
injection in the first pulse. Without hydro, the envelope of the model can
struggle and drive timesteps down.

Still, would be pretty interesting for someone to study more in detail how
much these numerical options affect the outcome. I did a few tests and did
not find significant differences, other than a varying reliability of the
models. But still, I never studied it systematically.
