[Mesa-users] No He burning for tutorial M=0.81 star

Hi Rich —

A star with that mass will typically taken longer than a Hubble time to reach He ignition (if indeed that ever occurs). Can you try running without any max age setting, and see what happens?

Sure, at some point in these plots, I was expecting to run a M=0.81 star simply from MS to AGB and see the star move towards the bottom left after the He flash into the horizontal branch, and the corresponding He burning in the Trho plot. However, even far after the age of the universe, I do not see any suggestion of the star going through any He burning, nor moving bottom left through the HB and back up into the AGB.

You mentioned two plots in your email but didn’t send them.  Would you?  You can save plots from pgstar as PNG files.  Perhaps that will help us to answer your question.

Maybe you can also explain in more detail what you were expecting to see at the “horizontal branch stage”.

Finally, it would help if you could save a model close to the end of the evolution that you were following so that anyone who tries your inlist doesn’t have to start from the beginning.

I am attempting to complete a simple task of using the inlists in the MESA tutorial to run an evolution track for a star with initial mass = 0.81 all the way into at least the asymptotic giant branch. I was expecting to see the track move onto the horizontal branch stage in the pgstar HR diagram and the corresponding helium burning in the Trho plot. However, there seemed to be no evidence of the HB in either of the plots.

I was wondering what would be the fix here in order to see the star clearly moving into the HB phase and He burning, and then eventually into the AGB? I have attached my inlists below in order for one to reproduce the problem. My operating system is Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS, MESA version 15140, and MESA SDK 15140 released December 18 2020 (current). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
