[Mesa-users] ppisn problem for version r15140

Hi Jeremy and Rob,
I will test whether the overshooting makes a difference.
I checked my runs again. My previous descriptions are not accurate. Sorry about that.
For the initial mass 90 case, it is a timestep issue. It's stuck during the first pulse,
limited by rel_E_err. I tried relaxing the rel_E_err and it would go to PISN if there's no
restriction to rel_E_err, but the rel_run_E_err in the end would exceed one and even reach
3d6. Is the result still accurate in this case?
For the initial mass 70, 80 and 130, it is not a timestep issue but an eos issue. For initial
mass 70 and 80, I encounter this error during first pulse: STOP store_eos_for_cell. I am
attaching the detailed error messages for initial mass 80 below. It appears that this error
occurs because chiRho is negative in a cell. For initial mass 130, this error occurs at the
start before the star reaches zams, but this time with chiT becoming negative. Is there
something wrong with the eos module?
Thanks a lot!
Jing-Ze

Hi,
That does actually sound like the problem I was having, but as Rob said, you haven't given us enough information to help you. The files I sent with that email were before the problem was solved so they won't help you test/fix this so I suggest you look at the advice Pablo gave me in that thread RE overshooting and changing it to either top only or core only (both worked for me).
Your inlists and run_star_extras look like the defaults, the only difference I see is that you set rotation to zero. You may want to turn off the rotation flag if you don't want rotation.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Okay, so we need more information to be able to help you.
What's limiting your timestep? Have you tried changing some timestep controls to see if that helps?
What is your star doing at this point in time? It is stuck during a pulse? During the relaxation process after a pulse? Between pulses? This is where making plots to see what the star is doing can help you.

Thanks Jeremy.
Yes. Apologies for the ambiguity.
The time-step is going to zero, but doesn't reach the lower limit
1d-20 seconds.
For most cases log dt falls to about -10 and the star doesn't evolve
after that. All the parameters on the terminal change very little so
I think it may be a lost cause. I just put a stop to it after running
a day on 4 cores.

Thanks,
Can you also enlighten us as what you mean by "fails to converge"?
Is the time-step going to zero?

Hi Jeremy,
Here are my inlist_ppisn, inlist_extra and run_star_extras files.
Also, am I keeping this conversation inside the list?
I'm still figuring our how to use the mailing list.
Thanks.
Best regards,
Jing-Ze

Hi Jing-Ze,
It is likely you are having a different problem to me, since the problem I had was specific to objects with masses <40ish, and low metallicities.
If you send me your inlist and run_star_extras I can have a look for you if you like?
I spent some time looking at the masses you describe in r-15140 so I may be able to help.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to run the template_ST (Merchant & Moriya 2020 A&A)
with a few modications from test_suite ppisn so that it can
start to run in r15140.
I've tried initial masses of 70, 80, 90, 100, 130 solar masses
without rotation. So far only the 100 solar mass case evolved
to its termination condition and reached a PISN. The rest just
failed to converge.
I've noticed a similar question "Question about (relatively) low
mass stars in the PPISN test suit" posted by Jeremy Sakstein. It
seems that Jeremy has found the way for ppisn to work in r15140.
But I only joined the mailing list yesterday, so I can't seem to
open the run_star_extras and inlist files attached to that mail.
I'd appreciate it if someone could re-send me those files or give
some suggestions.
Thanks a lot!
