Thanks for the excellent advice.  Concerning the strange need to turn off DT2 even when lnPgas_flag is true - it was a surprise to me too!   Turns out in certain situations the system decides to bail out of the lnPgas tables to search for an answer using the non-lnPgas eos.  And those are the cases that cause the problems since they seems to fail with DT2 but are ok without it.

You might try the current public release of mesa (12778).  You should be pleased to find that DT2 has gone away (and will not be coming back!).
