[Mesa-users] Effective temperature in the results of RR Lyrae simulation

Dear Bill, et al.,

Here is an example. I am using MESA version 12036 on my mac laptop, and running this example exactly as it appears in test_suite/rsp_Cepheid.

I have turned on the pgstar plots by making pgstar_flag = .true. in inlist_rsp_Cepheid

The RSP_Teff of this model in the inlist is defined as 6050 (K).

In the plot generated after a few cycles (screenshot attached), the effective_T is 5076 K (too low), and the plot in the upper right shows the cycles that are varying around T_eff = 5074-5078 K.

So I am not sure how or where these lower Teff values are being calculated for the plots. There is a history column file with 'effective_T'.

Thanks for your help!

Joyce

Dear Xiao-Wei, et al.

I noticed this low temperature too when running Cepheid models using RSP and looking at the set of dashboard plots and model summary output. I think that the number reported as the effective temperature in rsp on these plots and output is the temperature of the outermost zone (above the photosphere). The RSP inlist effective temperature is being used correctly to calculate the model.

Could you look at the result if you calculate the effective temperature using the luminosity and radius values that RSP is producing? When I calculate effective temperature this way I do obtain reasonable values that vary above and below the inlist T_eff during the pulsation cycle.

the model Teff, as estimated as T at the subcell optical depth corresponding to photosphere, is an option for both history logs and for pgstar plots. it should of course be used for any comparisons to requested RSP_Teff.

make sure you have included Teff and log_Teff in history_columns.list. note that effective_T is also available as a synomyn.
then you will get those values output as columns in the history.data log file.
and for pgplots you can (and usually should) make plots using Teff rather than surface T.

the inlist_pulse_pgstar_default i find in star/test_suite/rsp_Cepheid does in fact use Teff in the appropriate places.

Probably these plots should be modified to have a label of surface temperature on the axes and in the output box and in the model summary text at the bottom, or a better alternative is that the the T_eff should be calculated a different way (using L and R) for these plots and output.

Would it be possible to make this change to the test suite examples provided with RSP for future releases?

since i’m not able to find a problem in my current version on mesa, could you please provide details of what is wrong that you’d like to see changed.

as usual, without details to allow reproducing the problem we cannot provide detailed solutions. ;-)

cheers,
bill

Hi,
I'm using rsp_RR_Lyrae part to do the simulation of RR Lyrae stars, with inlist_rsp_RR_Lyrae of set B in the instrumental paper from 2_rsp.zip file. But it seems weird that every time the effective temperature is much lower than the initial effective temperature I set. For example, if I set initial effective temperature as 7800K, the results I got is around 6500K. Changing initial luminosity, mass and metallicity and convective modes doesn't help. I'm really appreciate it if you can help me. Thank you!

Cheers,
Xiao-Wei
