I've think I've managed to solve problem 2, after using Abhishek's fix for problem 1.

Edit gcc.wrapper and gfortrn.wrapper in /Applications/mesasdk/bin, adding the following:

--sysroot /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/SDKs/MacOSX10.14.sdk

...to the definition of the FLAGS variable. You may need to delete /Applications/mesasdk/etc/*.done to trigger regeneration of the compiler headers.
