[Mesa-users] heating area is not convective

Hi all,




I am injecting huge energy into a AGB star's envelope to simulate ejection of common envelope. The calculation proceeded well, but results showed that part of the heating area is not convective when the heating rate exceeds about 10**45 erg/year. This seems to be not physical. To solve the problem, I did a series of tests: 1) different envelope mass, 2) different metallicities, 3) different convection scheme, 4) different heating area, and 5) RGB star. However, none of them solved the problem but just shifted the critical heating rate for the phenomenon occurring. Thus, the problem may come from MESA itself. Could anybody help me?


Here is brief information about my calculation. The MESA version is 10108; AGB/RGB models are created by using the inlist files in mesa/star/test_suite/7M_prems_to_AGB; the heating scheme is uniform to heat a area in the envelope, which is a shell between r1 and r2 or between m1 and m2; before the heating starts, the stars are relaxed with several years.


I am attaching results of a test here (local quantities: convective velocity over sound velocity,total luminosity, the difference of radiative luminosity and total luminosity, and entropy). In this test,the initial model is a AGB star with mass 1.228 Msun, He core mass 0.628 Msun, and metallicity 0.02. The heating rate is 4*10**45 erg/year, and heating region is between 0.7 Msun and 1.0 Msun.I relaxed the model with one year. You can see from those figures there is a radiative area around mass isoline about 0.7 Msun after 1.4 year.
