Hello
I am trying to run a grid of binaries on MESA (version 10108). I am running into convergence issues with some of the models around some donor masses and orbital periods. After most of the mass transfer has happened, MESA cannot seem to compute the radius properly and the donor radius starts to fluctuate (included the figure showing donor radius evolution with Roche-lobe radius, you can see the problem around model numbers 3500). I also include the inlists and the edited run_binary_extras file I used, and a plot showing the mass transfer rate of the donor. I have tried different timestep controls that I found in other questions in the MESA archive, like:
surf_avg_tau_min = 0
surf_avg_tau = 10
max_mdot_redo_cnt = 150
min_years_dt_for_redo_mdot = 0
surf_w_div_w_crit_limit = 0.99d0
surf_w_div_w_crit_tol = 0.06d0
rotational_mdot_boost_fac = 1d10
rotational_mdot_kh_fac = 1d10
mdot_revise_factor = 1.2
implicit_mdot_boost = 0.1
And:
tol_correction_norm = 1.e-7
tol_max_correction = 1.e-5
tol_residual_norm1 = 1d-7
tol_max_residual1 = 1d-6
iter_for_resid_tol2 = 200
tol_residual_norm2 = 1d99
tol_max_residual2 = 1d99
But nothing seems to help. I also played around with the fr parameter in inlist_project to control the radius, but increasing that only makes the code unstable. I would appreciate it if anyone can help me figure out what I’m doing wrong. Please let me know if any other details are needed.
Thank you
Regards
Devina
