Hi Thomas,
Please include the mesa-users list in your replies, as this conversation can be useful to other MESA users.
In terms of familiarizing with the structure of the run_star_extras.f workflow, the MESA website and Josiah’s tutorials are a good starting point. I strongly suggest these are your first steps.

Once you have gone through that, you should be able to understand, modify and compile your run_star_extras.f
- Concerning a specific example of a run_star_extras.f that makes use of the other_am_mixing hook, I suggest you also look at Pascale Garaud’s lecture and labs on stellar mixing
( http://cococubed.asu.edu/mesa_market/ewExternalFiles/2014_garaud.zip <http://cococubed.asu.edu/mesa_market/ewExternalFiles/2014_garaud.zip> ) The second lab in particular deals with angular momentum transport. After this you should be able to easily complete the magnetic breakdown exercise, at least a simple implementation of it.
- Concerning binary star modeling, Selma de Mink and Pablo Marchant lectures and labs will get you started with running binary stars with MESA. But only do this once you have figure out all the above for single stars
( http://cococubed.asu.edu/mesa_market/ewExternalFiles/2017_marchant.zip <http://cococubed.asu.edu/mesa_market/ewExternalFiles/2017_marchant.zip> , http://cococubed.asu.edu/mesa_market/ewExternalFiles/2017_demink.zip <http://cococubed.asu.edu/mesa_market/ewExternalFiles/2017_demink.zip> )
Cheers,
-M

Sorry about the vague question it was hard to put it into words. Your lab assignment on magnetic breaking is one part of what I want to do for my master's thesis. I was trying to go through the first part of the assignment by adding the angular momentum diffusion coefficient, but I can't figure out Bill Paxton's instructions in the other_am_mixing.f90 file. I've been looking on the MESA website and in a Fortran 90/95 book I found to figure out how to modify the run_star_extras to add the one coefficient. I will have to eventually will have to learn how to modify the run_star_extras for a binary star model, because that's where my thesis will be focused on.
