My text editor (emacs) displayed these as ^M, so I just visually saw them.

The file command also showed me that there were mixed line terminators.
$ file inlist_pgstar
inlist_pgstar: ASCII text, with CR, LF line terminators

Exactly how to see this and prevent it is text editor dependent.  I
recommend you consult the manual / online help for whatever software you're
using.
