Why do you think this must be true?  It is not obvious to me that things
should be monotonic.  Degeneracy pressure becomes relatively more
important at lower mass.  I would expect that's the physical origin.

For example, see the lower panel of Figure 14 in Paxton et al. (2011).
The red dots are the ZAMS and you can see a similar non-monotonicity.
