I’ll go ahead and echo Bill and Rob and try to clarify a bit. Any type of MESA run can be achieved within MESA-Docker on Windows, but performance will not be optimal. On the same hardware, a full Linux installation will always be faster than running in Docker. You might be able to tweak things to get performance to be pretty close in Docker, but I would recommend Linux for anyone who is serious about using MESA over the long term for research.

MESA-Docker is mostly intended to enable Windows users to get up and running in MESA without the hassle of installing and learning a new operating system. That’s why we tend to emphasize it as a tool for education.

There’s nothing fundamentally wrong about running MESA this way, but if you’re eventually going to migrate to Linux to get the absolute best performance, I’d recommend doing so as soon as you can. There are several wonderful Linux distributions that are fairly easy to pick up. I use Ubuntu.
