The file

  $MESA_DIR/data/rates_data/reactions.list

has a list of some reactions and includes a column indicating the
"category" of each reaction.

You should also look at the subroutine extract_rates_from_reaclib in

  $MESA_DIR/rates/private/reaclib_input.f90

where this classification happens from reactions coming from reaclib (it
is primarily based on Z).
