the easiest route may be to select the quantities of interest 
(e.g., R(t), L(t), Teff(t)) from a mesa run and feed those into 
a standalone hz calculator written in a language of your choice.

alternatively, write a mesa module that does the hz calculation 
and invoke that new hz module via mesa's run_star_extra capability.

otherwise, i second josiah's suggestion for an intro to scientific computing.
