Hi Chris,

The mesa star models go out to whatever optical depth you have fixed for the outer edge of the outermost cell -- (AKA "the surface" of the model).
By default this means the photosphere, but you can revise it to larger or smaller values of tau (see wd_surf_at_tau_1m4 where the surface is moved out to tau = 1d-4).  But keep in mind that there is no advanced modeling of subtle effects in an atmosphere -- e.g., for RHD equations to take into account the gradual uncoupling of photons and gas.  We do use the venerable scheme of Paczynski 1969 to make adjustments for tau < 2/3 effects, but that's about it.

So, back to your question, it depends on what you mean by "atmosphere" and what sort of details you need.
