I'm just using what my local IT folks set up for me -- I believe it is just the Mac standard screen sharing, perhaps configured to use VNC.
I don't think the VNC is crucial --- as I recall we tried it in hopes of getting better service from the local ISP, but it didn't seem to have much effect.

BTW: just to finish the story, in my office I also have a linux workstation.  I use my big Mac Pro at work to log onto the linux box, with remove X windows enabled so that I can watch pgplots of mesa/star running on the workstation in my office using X windows on the Mac.   Then from home, I use screen sharing from my home Mac laptop to my work Mac to view remote X windows from a job running on my office linux workstation -- simultaneously using screen sharing and X remote windows.  And it actually works!  At least as long as my ISP gives me the bandwidth I need. ;D
