Postdoctoral positions

The Max Planck Independent research group “Stellar Ages and Galactic Evolution” (SAGE), based at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Göttingen, Germany invites experts in either scientific programming, statistical methods and/or pattern recognition to apply for postdoctoral positions.

In the SAGE research group we study stochastically oscillating main-sequence stars, subgiants and red-giant stars with the aim to infer their internal structures and their ages to unprecedented accuracy. These stellar ages, together with stellar distances, velocities and chemical compositions will be used to determine the structure of the Milky Way (http://www.mps.mpg.de/3163012/Das-Alter-von-Sternen).

Job descriptions:

Statistical methods: Statistical methods are becoming increasingly important in high-precision astronomy to distinguish signal from noise. We seek an expert on statistical methods to develop and implement methods optimised for stochastic oscillations to detect oscillation modes with low signal to noise ratio. These modes provide vital information about the stellar internal structures.

Pattern recognition: Pattern recognition has the potential to identify stars with similar properties from specific characteristics in their Fourier power spectrum. Additionally, an expert on pattern recognition will work on the structure of the Milky Way and identify groups of stars with similar properties to identify possible common origin.

Scientific programming: The analysis of the Fourier spectra of oscillating stars requires efficient and automated procedures to be applied to many stars with different characteristics. To (develop and) implement these procedures we invite a scientific programmer to join the SAGE team.
