[mesa-users] Removing mass from an irradiated planet

Dear MESA users,


I am using MESA (version 6794) to create and evolve irradiated planets
(using the test_suite irradiated_planet) and things go quite smoothly as
long as I don’t go too low in mass (<0.5 Mj or so) .
Now I am trying to artificially remove mass from an irradiated planet and I
am having convergence problems.

The steps I am doing are:

1) I create a planet (1Mj)
2) I add a core (10Mj)
3) I relax irradiation (~following inlist1 in the irradiated_planet
test_suite and section 2.4 of the second MESA paper)
4) I turn off the initial irradiation and change the atmosphere option
(~following inlist2 in the irradiated_planet test_suite). I then evolve the
planet until it is 1Gyr old.
5) I remove mass in a wind until max_age = 10e10.

I am attaching the inlist files for the various steps. I have tried
different equilibrium temperatures, ages at which I start removing mass,
and core masses. Increasing the mass loss rate the run ends earlier in the
evolution. With the specific mass loss rate used here, the code ends with
“termination code: min_timestep_limit” when the planet’s mass is ~0.3 Mj.

Any suggestions on what to play with to help convergence?
