It definitely removes the main stumbling block. I still have some residual
doubts about the compatibility of manifesto-modified LGPL with GPL, but
if the copyright holders say there is no problem then there is no problem.

Yes, I think that will do it. I take it we're implicitly allowed to cherrypick
that changeset from svn and apply it to previous releases.
