We should avoid them: they are often wrong, and may have unintended
consequences. With modern computers you hardly see the time taken by the
network (unless you are doing ~100 species). For years computers have been
designed to run Jack Dongarra's linpack very, very quickly; that was most
of the cost of computing a network. Now there are  even better ways (check
with Frank Timmes). Using a tiny (<40 nuclei) net is a bit like taking pi
to be 22/7 (or 3). If you have trouble reproducing someone's results with a
small net, they are probably just wrong. Forgive my rant, but I have spent
some time dealing with networks ;-)
