[mesa-users] New python plotting tool for MESA

Dear MESA users,



We have developed a new plotting software for MESA data, MESAplot.py. It is a replacement for the mathematica-based MESAFace.

It is very simple to use for both research and educational purposes. It is also completely open-source. It only requires python and a few popular python packages. Installation instructions are included with the download.



The idea is a graphical and dynamical interface where the output can be analyzed using buttons and menus, rather than typing. For example, you can change profile by simply sliding the age bar and show what is the corresponding age in the History plot by simply checking a box. You can also zoom in and out, show log or exponential plots, invert axes, show more quantities in the same figure etc. The menus include several premade plots, for example HR diagram, reactions, etc. Much more to come later.



Once you run it, the program is pretty self-explanatory. A major goal of this software was to create something that could be used without training.



The quality of the plots is still basic but we plan to improve soon, hopefully one day to publishing quality.



Please, try it and let us know if you have comments. We hope you like it and that it may become a good tool to be used in parallel to MESA, particularly in a classroom or with research students.
