[mesa-users] Excessive Runtime Terminates Evolution

I have come across similar miniscule timesteps in several runs recently and tried different variables to come up with a solution. Your email motivated me to again work on that problem.

Here is how to get information on your mesa installation, assuming you have set the environment variable $MESA_DIR.

svn info $MESA_DIR | grep "Revision"

You may also obtain helpful information by following the advice at the bottom of the page here.

	http://www.astro.wisc.edu/~townsend/static.php?ref=mesasdk

… it would be helpful if you could post the output of the following commands:

		uname -a
		gfortran -v
		echo $MESASDK_ROOT
		echo $PATH

I have mesa installed at ~/mesa but I run all my models from ~/Documents/mesa/ so as not to modify the installation directory. As is advised here.

	http://mesa.sourceforge.net/how_to_use_mesa_star.html

"create a separate working directory rather than doing things in the star/test directory.
The easiest way to set this up is to copy the star/work directory. You can put the copy
anywhere you’d like and give it any name you’d like."

I have been running your inlists in a directory called ~/Documents/mesa/Presley which is a clone of ~/mesa/star/work but using your inlists instead of the originals. I am making slight modifications including commenting out max_number_retries & max_number_backups as Josiah suggested and a few &star_job lines I prefer.

When I come up with an inlist that seems satisfactory I will send a follow-up email with it attached

I also have a folder called ~/Documents/mesa/scripts in which I keep various often used ruby and shell scripts for reference. I am attaching one that I use to print the mesa information for my setup. Therefore I can run it from any of my work directories using the command

	../scripts/mesa_installation_info.sh
