As a computer scientist, my approach would probably be to get rid of ALL of the controls and let users do it themselves via run_star_extras!
Of course, I would also write all of mesa in C or C++ or python --- but that's for the next generation to do (you?).
I agree that we need to reduce the clutter by hitting a balance, but at the moment I'm willing to live with some clutter (see my office for example).
