Thank you for your assistance: and the final instruction, running gfortrant --version, shows that the SDK is properly installed. :-)

I am sure I will have many more questions as I learn to use MESA: thank you for your patience! :-)

Hi Pam,
as you can see in Rich's MESA SDK page http://www.astro.wisc.edu/~townsend/static.php?ref=mesasdk
setting the environmental variables requires a different syntax depending on the type of terminal shell installed on your computer.
The default for most of OS installations is the BASH shell. So the commands that work for you are:

export MESASDK_ROOT=/Applications/mesasdk
source $MESASDK_ROOT/bin/mesasdk_init.sh

Now, as Rich explains to avoid repeating these commands everytime a session is started, you want to add those two lines
to a bash startup file. For example you can edit the file:

~/.bash_profile 

and add those two lines there.
