I don't think the inconstancies are all related to convection though many are.
There are convergence settings on qse, nse, eos, and the temperature and density
within a given step. Anywhere there is an "if test" is a candidate.
That said, a lot of the diversity comes from the mixing of He into the He
convective core at the end of helium core burning due to the expansion of the
He core (in Lagrangian mass).
