I just wanted to share a positive outcome with the new MESASDK.
If you have not been using it because of issues of needing help from 
a grumpy sysadmin, good news!, you can install it yourself now.
It no longer requires root access, it provides a version of gfortran
that is known to work with mesa, and it has just about everything else you'll
need to run mesa (you still must supply patience in large quantities of course).
