[mesa-users] A GUI interface for MESA output

Hi Bill and all,

We have posted a new version of the interface (MESAFace1.1) on the forum page
(http://mesastar.org/tools-utilities/mathematica/mesaface).
Now it uses a smarter way to download the files and can download the data directly from a folder posted on the web. Also, the data can be manipulated. For example, it is possible to plot the log of the data. Finally, we added the offset option for the axes, as you requested.

We hope you will all like it. Please, let us know what you think and if you have other comments or suggestions.

WOW!!!  That looks great -- I look forward to using it.   Thanks very much.

It must be easy to use, because even I managed!   And of course I started with
the hardest thing I could find -- the 1M from pre_ms to wd test case that takes 40,000+ steps.
It loaded all of the logs without complaint.  And then I could poke at buttons to get plots.
Awesome!!!     Please add a button to reverse direction of x or y axes.
And provide optional offset for axis values (e.g., so I can set age = 0 to be at peak of He core flash,
and then zoom in on that period of evolution).
And .....    are you ready for all of the happy users asking for more and more features!  ;-)

We've created a Mathematica-based (graphical and dynamical) interface for analyzing data from a MESA run. At first, it was just an idea that seemed implausible (and untouched for months). Then Stan Owocki (thanks!) encouraged us when he visited our campus to pursue this project. Fortunately, the manipulate functions in Mathematica provided a great framework to create something like this. It started as a project for our personal use; and over time, it has proven very useful for quickly and easily analyzing the stars (we have had undergrad students using it!). Some details:
--It was designed to be intuitive and dynamical (users can edit as seen fit).
--The interface analyzes both star.log and all the profiles (the various log.data).
--We are excited that undergraduates and possibly high schools can use this for demonstrations/teaching. However, it is also great for easy/in-depth analysis of stars by seasoned researchers.
--We will be including a link to a couple of zipped sample star directories for people to download (we're hosting). We thought this would be helpful for people wanting to try it out who don't easily have data available.
--We are planning on maintaining and updating this.

In the actual announcement, we will include more information on usage and such. It has some self-contained instructions, and we also have a short instructional paper that will follow within a few days, for people interested in editing and improving it.
