Hi Kevin,

The error you got with gfortran sounds similar to an issue Marten van Kerkwijk mentioned on this list July 18 and in an exchange with Agnes Kim on July 19.  He reported solving it by reverting the to line
  LOAD_MATRIX = -lmtx -lconst -lmesaklu $(LOAD_LAPACK) $(LOAD_BLAS)
in the makefile_header.

Using the SDK as Rich suggests is probably best.  But if that doesn't work out for some reason you might try this and see how it goes.
